The Anfield titans have been in scintillating form so far this season with wins over Chelsea, Arsenal and Leicester City all impressing whilst the way they have dealt with the likes of the Hornets and Hull City has been nothing short of ruthless.
It’s a sign that the Reds are ready to seriously challenge this season and according to Whelan, their improving defence is just as crucial a part of this run. ”
“Most people were celebrating the goals Liverpool scored against Watford and the overwhelming momentum Klopp’s team was able to build up and sustain over a full game”, wrote the 55-year-old.
”But I saw other things which made me even happier. I saw a much better balance to the team.”
“Against Watford, I saw defenders put their foot through the ball at the right time. I saw pragmatism at the back.
”It’s great to play the ball out when it’s right to do it but sometimes it’s a much better option to just play it long.”
The Reds face Southampton after the international break as their next fixture in the league.
Defensive frailty blighted Klopp’s first few months in charge, and while they are barely the most solid team in the league, Klopp has introduced a wonderfully fluid attacking style of play to the ranks.
