Liverpool: Marko Grujic returns to Hertha Berlin on season-long loan

Share

After an impressive season out on loan where Marko Grujic was dubbed Hertha Berlin’s best midfielder in the past 20 years by former head coach Pal Dardai via Bundesliga UK, Liverpool have once again allowed the Serbian to depart for another season.

The Reds confirmed through their official club website that the 23-year-old midfielder had returned to the Bundesliga side for a second season out on loan following a campaign where Grujic scored five goals from central midfield as well as averaging a WhoScored rating of 7.26, with Jadon Sancho the only Bundesliga player under the age of 23 to average a higher rating.

Of course, it makes sense as to why Jurgen Klopp has taken up the decision to loan out Grujic for a second season. At just 23, the Serbian international is still young and is at that stage of his career where he needs to be playing week-in-week-out in order to continue his development, something he will get at Hertha based on his 23 appearances for the club last season, a number which could have been higher had it not been to ankle injuries.

As well as playing consistent first-team football, the return of Oxlade-Chamberlain for the start of next season means that Liverpool’s midfield would be far too crowded for Grujic to be given a fair shot, and given how much the former Arsenal man played before his injury, it’s not hard to imagine he will return to the mix accordingly.

Grujic showed last season that he has what it takes to play at the top, but with a stacked midfield blocking his way at Liverpool and first-team football guaranteed in Berlin, it makes sense as to why the club have decided to let the Serbian depart Anfield for another year.
