Liverpool deny talks but remain keen to sign £87m “protagonist”

Liverpool deny talks but remain keen to sign £87m “protagonist”

Liverpool have struggled to maintain their high standards in their title-defending campaign, but are hoping to end the season with some success.

The Reds are currently 15 points adrift of league leaders Arsenal in sixth place with just 12 games remaining, and instead of preparing to lift the Premier League trophy, they will be challenging for a spot in the Champions League qualification places.

Arne Slot cemented his name in the club’s history when he won the league title in his debut season, but after a £450m summer spend, he has struggled to get the best out of his new-look squad so far.

Nevertheless, Liverpool have the opportunity to make their mark on their Champions League and FA Cup campaigns, with silverware not completely out of sight at this stage.

The transition period that the Reds are currently experiencing will require resilience and patience to allow new additions to bed in over a full season, but this wobble will not rule out further reinvestment in the summer.

It is no secret that Liverpool’s defensive depth has been depleted this season, with numerous injury issues, and a missed opportunity to sign Marc Guehi last September has haunted them ever since.

Though the defence will be the focal point of Liverpool’s transfer business in the coming months, there is also room for improvement in the wider forward positions.

According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool have denied holding talks to sign Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers this summer, but do remain keen on signing him.

The publication claims that reports of Liverpool being in communication with Villa to agree a deal for Rogers are false; however, he remains one of Liverpool’s long-term targets.

It is claimed that the Reds are not the only Premier League club looking to snap up Rogers’ services in the summer, with Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal also closely monitoring his situation.

Should Liverpool sign Morgan Rogers?

Both Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo have been a shadow of themselves in front of goal this season, with inconsistent contributions throughout.

Salah has been linked with a potential move to Saudi Arabia this summer after a difficult year for the Egyptian on Merseyside, and with one year remaining on his contract, there is a real chance a move could be on the cards.

Rogers – once hailed as Villa’s “protagonist” by manager Unai Emery – is an incredibly versatile talent who has a wealth of experience playing in attacking midfield, as well as on the left and right wing at Villa Park.

This versatility, combined with his finishing strengths and clinical final pass, makes him an ideal forward option for Liverpool to target, and it would not be surprising to see them make an approach.

Reports suggest that Aston Villa have slapped an £87m price tag on their star player, which would represent another huge investment for Liverpool, especially when they are in desperate need of prioritising the signing of defensive reinforcements this summer.

Not only that, the Reds will face competition from clubs who are also looking to finish this season in the Champions League places, so finishing strongly with elite European football on offer will be important in attracting Rogers to the Merseyside giants’ project.

With that being said, the future of Rogers will be one to watch when the summer transfer window opens.

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool will be willing to invest heavily again, and if that decision would depend on the climax of the current campaign.
