Manchester City History

Manchester City are a club with a lot of unknown history, they were originally founded in 1880 by St Mark’s Church who formed a casual football team. Seven years later the team evolved into Ardwick AFC who were founder members of the Second Division. A few years later, Ardwick AFC reformed as Manchester City Football Club, as they set out to represent the whole city.

City did not enjoy much success since they were formed compared to other top flight clubs; however the majority of their most notable honours have come from the past decade since their new billionaire ownership, in a bid to become the best club in English football.

City’s recent success has come from their new home stadium – Etihad. It was originally known as Eastlands and was built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games. It was soon converted into a football stadium and was renamed the ‘Etihad Stadium’ by Manchester City in July 2011, this was part of a ten-year agreement with club kit sponsors Etihad Airways – check out the latest Manchester City news as soon as it comes out of the Etihad.

Current champions, Manchester City managed to incredibly win the Premier League four times in the past eight years. They are currently back-to-back champions; however, this does not look like it will last long with Liverpool on the brink of becoming new champions for the first time during their great rivalry over recent seasons. City have also memorably won the FA Cup six times, and the League Cup seven times (currently on a three win stream). Despite great domestic success, the Sky Blues are yet to win a European Cup, and manager Pep Guardiola has his eyes set on the Champions League which he has previously won in other countries.

One of, if not the most memorable moments in the club’s history was the infamous ‘Aguerooooo’ Martin Tyler commentary, when the Argentinian secured City’s first Premier League title in the dying minutes of the season. Sergio Agüero is City’s all-time leading goal-scorer with an unmatchable 254 goals in 368 games, and Spaniard David Silva has made the most appearances for the club – 424.

Currently, City are facing issues with a possible ban in European competitions from next season due to financial fair play breaches; however, their squad still remains in-tact and well managed as they keep their current title of one of the best clubs in world football, by adding trophies to their cabinet.
