Manchester United are seriously considering a move for Brescia midfielder Sandro Tonali, according to Bleacher Report.
Scott McTominay has thrived in central midfield this year, scoring two goals in his last six Premier League games, including the club’s 2000th goal in Premier League history (via MEN).
However, finding a partner to play alongside him has been quite difficult for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with both Paul Pogba and Fred having been used, unsuccessfully, alongside the Scotsman.
Solskjaer has already labelled the Frenchman as one of the world’s best attacking midfielders, showing his reluctance to use him in a defensive role alongside McTominay (via The 42). Meanwhile United legend Roy Keane – as per Sky Sports – has lambasted the club for their signing of Fred.
In stark contrast, Tonali may prove to be the perfect partner for McTominay in a deep-lying midfield role. The Italian has featured in a defensive midfielder role in 11 out of the 12 games he has played this season (via Transfermarkt).
His ability to create from deep is highlighted by his 2.1 key passes per game in Serie A, which is more than Fred, however, just shy of Pogba’s average in the English top-flight. He also averages 1.1 tackles per game, showing his ability to shield a defence.
Tonali has been likened to legendary Italian duo Gennaro Gattuso and Andrea Pirlo with the 19-year-old admitting himself he plays like the two players (RAI Sport via Forbes).
Signing Tonali could complete the jigsaw that is United’s midfield. It would allow McTominay to play a box-to-box role, as he has shown in recent times he can do, and allow Pogba to play the attacking midfield role the Norwegian manager wants him to play.
