Manchester United defender Harry Maguire looks set to be unavailable for selection this weekend against Manchester City due to a muscle injury.

The Lowdown: England display

Maguire began the campaign as first choice under Erik ten Hag, however, he fell out of favour after back-to-back opening league defeats against Brighton and Brentford and hasn’t started a Premier League fixture since.

The 29-year-old was backed by Gareth Southgate though and played every minute against Italy and Germany in the UEFA Nations League, conceding a penalty against the latter of the two countries.

Southgate and Maguire reportedly had a private chat at Wembley following a disappointing performance against Germany, and it looks as if things have gone from bad to worse for the centre-back.

The Latest: Thigh problem

The Sun shared a story on Tuesday evening regarding Maguire, claiming that he is set to be out of action for two weeks through injury.

The defender suffered a thigh muscle injury but played through the pain, however, that has resulted in the player being sidelined for the immediate future.

The Verdict: Not ideal

You’d expect that Maguire wouldn’t have started at the Etihad on Sunday anyway, however, knowing he is out through injury isn’t exactly good news for Ten Hag.

The Red Devils have a whopping nine fixtures in October so may need to call upon Maguire at some point to provide cover to Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez. However, it seems as if United won’t have their club captain fit for a while, starting this Sunday.
