Manchester United: Samuel Luckhurst criticises Donny van de Beek

Manchester United: Samuel Luckhurst criticises Donny van de Beek -Manchester United News

Journalist Samuel Luckhurst has criticised Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek, saying that he has looked out of his depth in his last two games.

The Lowdown: Van de Beek poor in defeat

The Red Devils were beaten 3-1 away to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday in what was a bitterly disappointing result for Erik ten Hag’s side.

Van De Beek started the match for United but the Dutchman had little impact on the game, having no shots or dribbles during the contest and completing a mere 13 passes.

It was a forgettable display from the former Ajax man, who has started only five league matches for the Red Devils since coming to Old Trafford in 2020.

The Latest: Luckhurst critical of Van de Beek

Taking to Twitter, Luckhurst claimed that Van de Beek has been way off it against both Real Sociedad and Villa over the past week.

The Manchester Evening News reporter stated:

“Watching Van de Beek twice last week, he resembles a Glyndebourne enthusiast who has ended up at Glastonbury by mistake. He couldn’t hack the pace against a La Liga side so he was never going to against a Premier League team under a new manager.”

During the game, Luckhurst also said that “Van de Beek doesn’t work” in general, seemingly suggesting that the 25-year-old is an ineffective operator for Ten Hag’s team.

The Verdict: Time to sell?

Van de Beek arrived with a big reputation after helping Ajax to reach the 2019 Champions League semi-finals but it is almost unfathomable how ineffective he has been in a United shirt.

The 25-year-old has registered just two goals and two assists in 56 appearances for the Red Devils, highlighting how meagre his impact has been at Old Trafford.

Premier League - Manchester United v Everton

Manchester United fans, do you remember who scored your first goal of the 21/22 season?

It has reached the stage where it could be time to sell Van de Beek altogether and try to recoup some of the money for him, considering that even his former Ajax boss Ten Hag seems to be struggling to get a tune out of the player.
