Tottenham Hotspur: Gabby Agbonlahor drops big Max Aarons transfer claim

Gabby Agbonlahor has dropped a big transfer claim after it emerged that Tottenham Hotspur are pursuing Max Aarons.

The Lowdown: Aarons linked with Tottenham

Football Insider have recently reported that Spurs have approached Norwich City to register their interest in the England U21 international ahead of the summer transfer window.

Should Tottenham sign Aarons?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Given that they have only Serge Aurier, who is being pushed towards an exit, and Matt Doherty currently on their books in that role, the North London club are clearly not happy with their current options at right-back, and so feel the need to go out and sign another one when the window opens.

The Latest: Agbonlahor backs potential Aarons to Spurs move

Agbonlahor, who has plenty of experience of playing in the Premier League with Aston Villa and is now a pundit for Sky Sports, has since backed a potential move from Aarons to the Lilywhites.

Speaking to Football Insider, the Englishman gave his thoughts on the transfer development:

“100 per cent, he’s just got that speed.

“I’ve been disappointed that Doherty hasn’t played so much but I do think Doherty’s more of a wing-back than a right-back. He’s not the best at defending, he’s better going forward.

“If you had a super-strong right-sided centre-back of a three then you could let Doherty fly forward but Spurs haven’t got that.

“For me, Max Aarons is the perfect right-back. Up and down. He can defend, he’s quick.

“I’m sure that’s one Spurs will be hoping to get over the line.”

The Verdict: Tottenham must sign Aarons

THFC should certainly try and sign Aarons, and could indeed sell one of Aurier or Doherty to help fund the move.

Comparing the stats of all three players in their respective leagues so far in the 2020/21 term, Aarons has averaged more key passes (1.4), dribbles (1.3), crosses (0.8) and long balls (2.3) per game than the Tottenham duo (Whoscored), suggesting that he poses much more of an attacking threat.

Yes, the EFL Championship is certainly not as high of a standard as the top flight, but that is not to say that Aarons does not possess attacking qualities.

At just 21 years of age as well, the full-back has a lot of potential to still fulfil, and Spurs could benefit a lot from that.
