Everton supporters were left to drown their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern over the weekend after seeing the Toffees go down 5-2 at home to Arsenal on Sunday, a result which plunged the club into the bottom three of the Premier League.
The Merseyside outfit went into their clash with Arsene Wenger’s men having won just two of their first eight league games, but made an excellent start on Sunday thanks to Wayne Rooney’s 12th minute opener. However, the Gunners hit back admirably with four unanswered goals from Nacho Monreal, Mesut Ozil, Alexandre Lacazette, and Aaron Ramsey to seize the initiative, and although Oumar Niasse made it 4-2, Alexis Sanchez had the final say with a fine fifth late on.
And defeat brought about the end of Toffees chief Ronald Koeman, who was subsequently sacked on Monday, and as such David Unsworth has taken temporary charge of the team and will lead the side against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
The 44-year-old spent over a decade of his professional career at Goodison Park between 1992 and 1997, and then 1998 and 2004, in which time he played over 200 games for the club and helped them to the FA Cup title back in 1995.
And the former defender took his first press conference as caretaker boss on Tuesday afternoon ahead of their trip to Stamford Bridge, a press conference that has stimulated quite a response from Everton supporters on Twitter.
And it’s fair to say that many were impressed and encouraged by the 44-year-old, and as such many feel that he could well get the job on a permanent basis…
