On the anniversary of Michael Owen becoming Newcastle’s record signing, fans of The Magpies have taken to Twitter do discuss the deal that happened 13 years ago.
Owen did not have the greatest spell in the northeast, struggling to replicate the form that he showed in Liverpool and Real Madrid colours over his four year spell.
The news, however, has garnered a mixed response from fans. Some fans have been quick to criticise the injury-prone player’s performances, accusing him of being a waste of money. On the other hand, some fans leapt to his defence, describing what a player he was at St James’ Park.
The majority of fans, though, vented their spleen at the fact that Newcastle still have not improved on their record signing from 13 years ago. This has largely been directed at owner Mike Ashley, whose running of the club has come under scrutiny from the fans in the past.
