Newcastle fans on Twitter buzzing to see Barreca announced

Newcastle fans are being treated to the best Deadline Day that they could have imagined. The majority of the transfer window has been spent with the Magpies believing they’d be signing no one, however, today it’s burst into life in St James Park and the first player announced has been the Italian full-back, Antonio Barreca.

Newcastle United are pleased to confirm that defender Antonio Barreca has joined the club on loan for the rest of the season, with an option to buy, from @AS_Monaco.

The Magpies tweeted the news after confirming it on their website and the fans are all over the moon. Before today Rafa Benitez had just one senior left-back in Paul Dummett and it was always going to be a top priority to bring in a full-back as cover who isn’t Javier Manquillo, who has proved to be an awful replacement at the back on both sides.

The 23-year-old full-back could be making a permanent move over the summer although that is yet to be confirmed. The fans have also noticed one other thing about the defender as he’s set to wear the number 23 shirt at the club, after being pictured in a training top with 23 embroidered on the front. That number was formerly worn by fan favourite Shola Ameobi. The chances of Barreca matching Ameobi on Tyneside is unlikely, but he’ll certainly give it his best.
