For Newcastle fans, things can’t get much worse than they have this summer. Not only have the club made a profit so far in the transfer market, but they’ve now been priced out of a deal for a free agent. Mexico defender Diego Reyes was released by Porto this summer as his contract expired and according to Chris Waugh of The Chronicle, Newcastle have withdrawn their interest in him.
Free agent Diego Reyes has been looked at by #nufc – but at this stage a deal is looking unlikely. Mexico international also has interest from West Ham & Fenerbahce, with the Turkish side favourites at the moment to sign ex-Porto centre-back

Newcastle weren’t the only club who held an interest in Reyes. West Ham United and Fenerbahce both hold an interest in the Mexcian, with the Turkish club leading the way to sign him. The defender has won 55 caps for his country although he missed out on the World Cup this summer with a hamstring injury. If he was fit he’d likely have played considering he appeared in all of Mexico’s games at the confederations cup last summer.
Reyes would have been a great fit at St James Park. The 25-year-old is a versatile defensive-minded figure who’s capable of playing centre-back, right-back and in defensive midfield and those qualities would make him a useful player under Rafa Benitez. However, it looks like he’ll disappear into obscurity in the Super Lig with Fenerbahce now the Turkish club are leading the race to sign him.

Why is that club unable to conclude transfer deals. Every single link is always, always, always comes to nothing. #NUFC #jokeclub

Nice try but we now need to look at Rafa’s 6th choice.

It’s becoming more painful every day for Newcastle fans as they’ve missed out on a free agent.
