Newcastle United have never won the League Cup in their history, despite having six FA Cups to their name. However, Rafa Benitez will be keen to end that long wait for the cup this season and what better way to start then smashing Sunderland at St James Park. That will be the dream for a lot of Magpies, who haven’t been able to celebrate a win over their Northeast rivals in a long time.
The last time Newcastle fans were able to celebrate a victory over their bitter rivals was way back in August 2011 when they triumphed 1-0 at the Stadium of Light. However, the fixture has been played nine times since then with the Black Cats winning six of those and the other three ending in a stalemate, including the most recent one back in March 2016. If the clubs do get drawn against each other in the Carabao Cup, you can guarantee it will be a cracking affair.
