Newcastle fans have been struggling as of late. Their side is fighting relegation with a manager who looks destined to leave in summer, an owner who cares more about purchasing failing retailers than football players and they can’t get any deals over the line. That’s become even more apparent as Gelson Martins has opted for Monaco over them.

To hear that a promising young player has chosen a loan move to Monaco ahead of one to Newcastle may not sound too ludicrous on the face of things. However, when you look a little deeper it really shows how toxic Mike Ashley’s Newcastle have become. Monaco are a side in dire-straits, yet players would still rather move to the Stade Louis II ahead of St James Park.
The French side has lost the majority of their stars, sit in the Ligue 1 relegation zone and have just sacked Thierry Henry and hired his predecessor in Leonardo Jardim. The French club are also suffering major financial issues and look like they’ll be bailing out of the French top flight, yet players are still picking a season there ahead of one in the Northeast of England, and the fans Magpies’ aren’t at all shocked.
