Newcastle United: Fans rage as Lille’s Luis Campos turns down sporting director role on Tyneside

Plenty of Newcastle United fans are fuming at the news that Lille’s Luis Campos has turned down an astronomical offer from the Tyneside club to become their new sporting director, according to L’Equipe (via NUFC 360‘s Twitter page).

Indeed, this is potentially a huge blow to the would-be owners given the man’s pedigree in the footballing world. The Saudi-led consortium would perhaps be looking for a big name to join them on their journey to take the Magpies to where they want them to be, and Campos could certainly fit the bill.

As noted by Bleacher Report, he has gained a reputation as one of football’s most astute talent spotters during his time at Lille and Monaco, helping to launch the careers of players such as Fabinho, Bernardo Silva, Thomas Lemar, Anthony Martial and Nicolas Pepe.

Perhaps looking for the appointment of a new director is rather speculative given that the prospective takeover in the northeast has not yet officially been confirmed by the Premier League. Sceptics may say that the deal may not even be approved at all given various stumbling blocks threatening to stop the bid.
