Many Newcastle United fans have been discussing news on the prospective takeover in the northeast from MP Oliver Dowden as he reiterated to Sky Sports (via NUFC 360) that the government believes that the deal is ultimately a decision for the Premier League and therefore not for them.
He added that it is for the league to conduct a fit-and-proper-person test, as they do that for anyone looking to take over teams in England’s highest division, and it is also right that they allow the league to conduct that.
This may come as a positive revelation for some members of the Toon faithful as there have been outside parties looking to oppose of the bid for their own reasons. However, if the decision is ultimately down to the Premier League, then in theory only they can get in the way of the proposed takeover from the Saudi-led consortium.

Current government don’t really do much other than PR. As if they’re ganna step in and block a deal with their pals in Saudi Arabia 😂

It’s almost as if they don’t want to interfere in something that doesn’t concern them, and isn’t in their best interests to do so.

Imo that’s the final hurdle. What else can they fail it on now. They have given bein sports every opportunity.

It sounds like the Premiere League were scared to block it, so they were hoping the government would, but obviously that won’t happen now.
