Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte, via The Boot Room have reported that Newcastle are interested in 20-year-old Vasco da Gama forward Marrony, who plays mostly as a left winger, as shown on WhoScored.

Newcastle’s head of recruitment, Steve Nickson, is said to have flown out to Brazil in order to get a deal completed.

Marrony has a £31.5 million release clause in his contract, though it is uncertain whether Newcastle would need to pay that fee to bring him to St. James’ Park.

Marrony is a relative unknown, but broke through at Vasco de Gama and has gone on to make 22 appearances for the Brazilian side, scoring once.

While he must be a talented player if Newcastle are this invested in bringing him to the club, there can be an element of risk in bringing someone in who hasn’t played many games in a lesser league.

However, there will always be a sense of excitement and anticipation around the idea of bringing a little known samba star to your club, with many teams having benefited from this type of player in the past – for example, Gabriel Jesus wasn’t that well known by many in England until he signed for Manchester City.

There should be a sense of wariness around a deal like this, especially if Newcastle end up having to pay anything near the fee of Marrony’s release clause.

However, there is a part of many who can’t help but allow their interest to be piqued by this sort of player, it will be very interesting to see if anything comes of this move.
