Yesterday marked 18 years since Dennis Bergkamp scored arguably one of the famous goals in Premier League history at St. James’ Park and lots of Newcastle fans still haven’t forgotten about it.
After taking a pass at his feet, Bergkamp lifted the ball over to his right with his left foot, before turning past Nikos Dabizas and guiding the ball into the back of the net.
Writing in the Telegraph, Jonathan Liew stated “it was not just a great goal, but an important goal: a decisive milestone in Arsenal’s Double-winning season.” Indeed, Bergkamp’s finish took Arsene Wenger’s side above Sir Bobby Robson’s Newcastle who ended the season in fourth place.
According to Transfermarkt, the former Dutch international was a regular thorn in Newcastle’s side throughout his career, scoring 5 goals and registering 3 assists in 18 appearances against the Magpies. Speaking in an interview on Arsenal legend Ian Wright’s Youtube Channel, Bergkamp admitted he had to “have contact with Dabizas, a little push, and then the ball automatically came back to my right as it spun and then you have to pick the corner.”
Unsurprisingly loads of the Toon Army have tweeted their total displeasure with plenty of fans suggesting the technique was a fluke rather than a wonder goal after a video of the game was posted online.
