Our Newcastle fans here in the Transfer Tavern are really hoping that Rafa Benitez is going to pull some late transfer rabbits out of the hat in this window.
It’s been a tough summer for the Magpies in terms of signing players with them looking slightly hamstrung by finances and clearly not getting the numbers in that they would have liked.
Indeed, the side is still looking far too much like a second tier team at the moment and that is a recipe for disaster so Benitez is surely going to be working feverishly to try and get some deals over the line.
Who arrives, then, remains to be seen but we’ve been mulling it over here by the bar and one name that’s come up in conversation is that of Eliaquim Mangala.
The Magpies could certainly do with a proper top level defender in their squad and, though Mangala is not world class, he’s certainly better than the likes of Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark with all due respect.
Indeed, the Manchester City man could easily hold his own for a top half Premier League side and those are the kinds of players Newcastle need to be going after if they are to stay afloat.
He’s not going to cost much to take away from City either as they don’t want him so it’s time the Magpies make their move.
