Newcastle United fans here in the Tavern are hoping that Rafa Benitez brings in a couple of quality additions in the summer, after a less than convincing first season back in the Premier League.
The Magpies have been criticised over the past couple of transfer windows after failing to bring in enough world-class players, with a mixture of Mike Ashley’s stubbornness and Rafa Benitez’s decision-making causing problems.
And, it now looks as if one of this season’s signings could be heading for an exit from St James’ Park already, as Newcastle are reportedly willing to negotiate a price for midfielder Mikel Merino in the summer.
Indeed, the Spaniard has struggled to come to terms with English football since making the move from Borussia Dortmund, with a dip in form over the past few weeks causing for many of our local northerners to fear the worst. And, with Mohamed Diame and Jonjo Shelvey currently enjoying a rich vein of form, the 21-year-old has struggled to make it into the starting lineup having contributed very little to their survival bid since his late winner over Crystal Palace in October.
Nevertheless, we’re asking supporters, should Newcastle sell Merino in the summer months?
