The proposed takeover of Newcastle United has potentially been dealt a blow as the Reuben brothers are looking to bid for the New York Mets baseball team, according to Variety.

As per the outlet, David and Simon Reuben, who have gained their fortune by investing in leisure, technology companies and in real estate, have a combined net worth of $14bn, which equates to around £11.2bn.

Whilst they do have a lot of money, some members of the Toon faithful may be slightly worried that the Reuben brothers are turning their attentions elsewhere.
They are due to hold a 10% share in the Tyneside club if the prospective takeover does eventually go through, with businesswoman and head of PCP Capital Partners Amanda Staveley due to hold another 10% and the Saudi Arabian crown prince Mohammed bin Salman and his country’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) set to be the majority owners with the remaining 80%.

However, whilst the Reubens have invested in other companies previously, the fact that they seem to have turned their attentions to bidding for the Mets may be a sign that the takeover of the Magpies is far from completion.
Indeed, members of the Toon faithful will be hoping that this is not a distraction from the £300m deal that would end Mike Ashley’s reign of 13 years at Newcastle United.
Nevertheless, everything to do with the bid is all up in the air at the moment and fans will just be hoping that the Premier League approve of the takeover soon.
