As per the outlet, the 28-year old will likely become the first summer signing on Tyneside and is expected to be the new third-choice goalkeeper at St. James’ Park following the departure of Rob Elliot.
Steve Bruce is apparently looking at other potentially free additions as he looks to bolster up his squad before the start of the 2020/21 season.
Gillespie was an academy player in the northeast but it did not quite work out for him, although he is now looking to make an impact if and when called upon assuming that he makes the switch.
The Englishman had played in 38 games in all competitions for Motherwell in 2019/20, keeping a relatively impressive 16 clean sheets and conceding 45 goals, according to Transfermarkt.
While these stats are from Scottish football, which is a different level to the English game, the fact that Gillespie is likely to be brought in as an emergency third-choice goalkeeper could turn out to be a smart piece of business from the Magpies.
He could well be the first new face to join up with Newcastle after the proposed takeover of the Toon is completed, providing that Amanda Staveley’s Saudi Arabian-led group can get their £300m bid approved by the Premier League.
