Responding to an announcement from Newcastle United’s official account, many supporters have been in full discussion over Fabian Schar’s 2019 Player of the Year award as many fans lauded his ‘standout‘ contribution with a notable nod to ex-boss Rafael Benitez.
Schar, who made 22 starts over the 2018/19 season, managing a noteworthy 5.7 clearances per game (WhoScored), set himself apart from the rest by marshalling the back line under Benitez – resulting in him being awarded the 2019 Player of the Year. Schar has partnered centre-backs Jamaal Lascelles and Federico Fernandez sporadically in Newcastle’s favoured back five this season – averaging more tackles (2) and interceptions (2.1) than the pair despite making fewer clearances.
Since the announcement, many supporters have come out to praise the Swiss international for his contribution despite Newcastle’s lowly position of 14th, highlighting his performances under Benitez in particular as a real positive and giving no credit to current manager Steve Bruce.

Maybe Bruce might play him now again 🤔 Schar was one of our standout players last year under Rafa but like so many of the other players this season, Bruce can’t get a performance out of them – the Club is a shambles led by buffoons, such a shame!
