Newcastle United have more than their fair share of problems this transfer window and they seem set to continue.
Ayoze Perez has already been sold, while Martin Dubravka and Sean Longstaff have also been linked to moves away by Alan Nixon and The Guardian respectively.
Now, Fabian Schar is the latest of Newcastle’s main men who could be set to move away from St. James’ Park, as reported by Calciomercato via The Shields Gazette with AC Milan the team showing interest.
When Schar was signed for £3 million last summer, it seemed like a shrewd addition but the Swiss international may have exceeded the expectations even some of the most optimistic fans had of him to become one of the club’s stars.
He started 22 league games last season, coming on as a substitute twice and showed he can make an impact at the top end of the pitch with four goals and an assist. That strike against Burnley won the goal of the month award and his two-goal contribution against Cardiff saw Garth Crooks compare him to a certain Philippe Albert.
Though as a centre back he was always going to be judged on his contributions at the back, and the 27-year-old didn’t disappoint there either.
He made 2.5 tackles, 2.8 interceptions, 5.7 clearances and 0.7 blocks per match, which helped Newcastle on their way to coming seventh in the Premier League charts for least goals conceded.
Clearly Milan are a huge club, but Newcastle simply must do all they can to keep hold of him. Having lost most of their goals in the form of Salomon Rondon (11) and Ayoze Perez (12), they cannot afford to have their defence weakened, especially as they remain without a manager.
It is understandable why Schar is a wanted man, but losing him would be disastrous for a Newcastle side who haven’t made a signing yet and could see other key players leave.
