Newcastle United: Fans fume over shock move for Mark Gillespie

Some Newcastle United fans are fuming over a reported shock move for Motherwell goalkeeper Mark Gillespie, who has emerged as a surprise target for Steve Bruce, according to the Daily Record.

It has been claimed that the manager would like to add an experienced shot-stopper to provide some competition for the Tyneside club’s current first-choice keeper Martin Dubravka. Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot are currently playing back-up to the Slovakian and are likely to seek moves elsewhere in the upcoming summer transfer window, as per the article.

Bruce and the keeper’s coach Simon Smith have both been impressed by the man who came through the youth ranks at NUFC, but never made a senior appearance.

The 28-year old has played 38 times in all competitions for the Well this season, keeping 16 clean sheets and conceding 45 goals, as per Transfermarkt.

Some members of the Toon faithful may question the difficulty of Scottish football and whether he could make the step up if needed in England. These Magpies were fuming when they read the reports on Twitter:
