Needing a win to stay up on the final day of the 2014/2015 season, Newcastle United were desperate for a hero to lift them out of danger – with recent legend and cancer survivor Jonas Gutierrez eventually taking the mantle and sealing their Premier League status after a tense afternoon.
St. James’ Park was rocking in the hopes of lifting a squad that needed a victory to survive, with former midfielder Moussa Sissoko eventually giving them a crucial lead with a downward header that set the tone for a memorable occasion.
However, that wasn’t to be the iconic memory of the encounter, with cult hero Gutierrez driving an acute shot into the bottom corner to all but secure the Magpies’ survival in the top flight – and given his battle with cancer a year beforehand, it was an emotional moment to say the least.
Most Geordie supporters remember the Argentine waving his jersey in celebration to the adoring crowd upon scoring one of their most iconic goals of the decade, and now supporters have justly crowned it as the highlight of the 2010s.
Here’s what they had to say on Twitter.
When Jonas Gutierrez came back from his cancer battle and shushed Mike Ashley after saving Newcastle United from being relegated.

Jonas for his goal, his bravery, the phenomenal levels of emotion and the way he publicly showed the club up to be what it is under the destructive and sapping rule of Mike Ashley #nufc
