Newcastle United: Fans laud Rafa Benitez signing Daryl Murphy who proved Mike Ashley wrong

Many Newcastle United fans are lauding their former striker Daryl Murphy after a piece from ChronicleLive reflected on his career at the Tyneside club.

As per the article, Murphy recalled the moment when he drove into the Magpies’ training ground, as supporters waited to get autographs from him.

The 37-year old was signed by Rafa Benitez, and the player admits himself that perhaps it was an underwhelming one, especially with his Sunderland roots. Murphy claims that because he was signed by the 60-year old, members of the Toon faithful gave him a chance, as they had trust in the Spanish manager.

The Irish international also talked about his positive attitude in training, and said that he loved playing for NUFC.

As per the report, Mike Ashley did not approve of the signing given his age, but Murphy proved him wrong. He scored six goals and provided one assist in 18 appearances in all competitions under Benitez, according to Transfermarkt.
