Newcastle United: Fans laugh off links with Lyon talisman Moussa Dembele in quest for striker

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Newcastle United scouts attended Lyon’s 2-1 victory over Bordeaux last Saturday – along with talent officials from a host of other Premier League clubs including Manchester United, Manchester City and West Ham – in order to watch in-form striker Moussa Dembele in action.

Dembele, who has racked up a prolific 13 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions so far this campaign, including an assist in the Champions League (as per Transfermarkt), is said to be valued at around £43 million – eclipsing the club record fee that brought flop Joelinton to St. James’ Park. In terms of goalscoring, the Frenchman’s proficiency in finding the net far outweighs that of the Magpies’ current forward line – with Andy Carroll and Joelinton currently on just one strike between them in the Premier League this season, courtesy of WhoScored. Even though Dembele averages only half the amount of successful aerial duels, the former Celtic man dwarfs them in terms of league shots per game – perhaps highlighting a more potent attacking threat.

However, despite the report, Magpies fans are less than hopeful of landing the forward – taking to Twitter and laughing off the links. Here’s what they had to say below.
