Newcastle United could be set to include Andy Carroll in their next Premier League squad.
The Magpies face Brighton & Hove Albion at St James’ Park on Saturday, and Steve Bruce could finally name the former Liverpool and West Ham striker on the bench according to the Daily Mail.
Since re-joining the club on deadline day in the summer transfer window, Carroll has yet to feature as he has been recovering from an ankle operation he underwent in March. But it is thought that he is now closing in on a return to action after a specialist gave him the all-clear.
The Toon could certainly do with some more firepower having managed to score just four goals in their opening five Premier League encounters. Their blunt attack is certainly a reason why they currently reside in the relegation zone, with big signing Joelinton having managed just one goal since arriving from 1899 Hoffenheim.
Added to that, they are also missing Dwight Gayle who is still fighting to overcome a calf problem (via ChronicleLive).
However, with just three goals in his last 28 Premier League appearances, is Carroll really the answer to Newcastle’s goal-scoring woes?
The Geordie faithful have been reacting to the news of Carroll’s imminent return on Twitter and it would be fair to say there are mixed feelings about it. Here is what a few of them had to say:
No pressure Andy, but you need to play 30+ games and score 25 goals 👍
