Newcastle United: Some fans slam journalist’s sympathy for below-par Newcastle performance

Newcastle were dominated by Leicester on New Years Day when they lost 3-0, and going down to 10 men for over half an hour through injuries didn’t help either. The Athletic’s Newcastle writer Chris Waugh was sympathetic to Steve Bruce’s men because of the circumstances, but it’s clear plenty of the Newcastle faithful didn’t agree on being so forgiving.

According to WhoScored, the Magpies had just 23 per cent of possession yet still managed to make fewer tackles than their opponents, 15 to 17. The site also notes they managed just two shots on target the whole game compared to Leicester’s 10, and it was Waugh himself who described the second period as Newcastle taking part in a “defensive training exercise”.

He pointed out “they have covered some serious ground” but it appears that’s not good enough for the Newcastle fans who clearly expected more from their team on New Year’s Day. In reply to the tweet from the journalist, fans responded to show just how disappointed they were at the performance of their team and how much they disagree with the reporter’s comments.
