Many Newcastle United fans have slammed Miguel Almiron for his efforts against Chelsea on Saturday, as Steve Bruce’s Magpies were beaten 1-0 to slip inside the bottom three of the Premier League table.
The Toon headed into the weekend a point above the relegation places having beaten Manchester United in their last league encounter prior to the international break, but could not record their third win of the campaign on their travels to West London.
A sole effort by Marcos Alonso in the 73rd-minute decided the result of Newcastle’s clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, with the Spanish left-back scoring the winning goal three minutes after Andy Carroll replaced Almiron.
Asuncion, Paraguay-born Almiron had played out his ninth top-flight outing of the term (TransferMarkt) on the wing Alonso ventured forward from to score, but could not affect proceedings in his side’s favour as he went a 19th game in Black and White without a goal or assist to his name.
The 25-year-old, who has been capped by his country 20 times, also only attempted one shot at Kepa Arrizabalaga’s goal, per WhoScored data, which was blocked by Alonso, as he darted back to prevent the Magpies from scoring on the break following a well-worked move between Allan Saint-Maximin, Joelinton and Almiron.
Newcastle’s former club-record, £21million purchase (Guardian) failed to record a key pass at Stamford Bridge, either, with five of Almiron’s 24 attempted passes failing to find a teammate, while only eight of his attempted passes were marked as directing play toward Kepa’s net.
Almiron also failed to complete any of his four attempted dribbles, and did not attempt a tackle beyond the 33rd-minute.
His efforts left many Newcastle fans underwhelmed, with one supporter suggesting he is not up to the standard of the Premier League.

How is it that Almiron runs so fast but never seems to go anywhere ? #NUFC

I think part of the problem with Almiron is that he has zero right foot. Everything is on his left. #nufc

I struggle to see what Almiron brings to this side in terms of actually producing anything #nufc

Bruce absolutely has to stop playing Almiron on the right, it just isn’t working #NUFC #CHENEW

Good performance, I think Joelinton and Almiron are becoming problems at attack, it was very clear that we needed an extra body in midfield towards the end, overall okay but some concerns #nufc

Almiron hea no end product, only person who looks threatening is ASM but no one moves into space for him to get a pass/cross in.

Almiron is not premier league quality, not even 1 assist or a goal since he has been here and his diving is embarrassing.
