Speaking to Football Insider, ex-Spurs midfield man Michael Brown has voiced his opinion on Danny Rose’s January loan move to Newcastle United, explaining how he meant no ‘disrespect‘ but can’t quite understand why the Englishman opted for Tyneside.
Brown, who played for Spurs over two seasons in the mid-2000s, amassing 39 league starts and two goals from midfield (SoccerBase), has come out to voice his opinion over Rose’s loan move to Newcastle United, with Euro 2020 on the horizon and England manager Gareth Southgate looking at players who perform regularly. Despite this, Brown has hinted that there was a ‘perfect opportunity‘ to play football whilst remaining at Spurs, regardless of Ryan Sessegnon and Ben Davies being seemingly ahead of Rose in Jose Mourinho’s pecking order.
In what could have been a move to earn more playing time, the Englishman opted to join the Magpies on a temporary basis, but Brown still doesn’t quite understand why he chose Newcastle.
“It looks like a great signing but to me, Danny Rose, I just don’t know why he goes there,” Brown told Football Insider.
“Without being rude, I don’t know why he goes to Newcastle. He says he’s going to let his contract tick down to then go on loan to Newcastle?
“I know he’s well represented, Mark Rankin who has a base of several full-backs in the Premier League who you’d all know.
“In this Spurs side there was a perfect opportunity for him to play football, with no disrespect to Newcastle, a Spurs side where he should be playing games.”

Rose made his debut under Steve Bruce during the 0-0 draw at home to Norwich City at the beginning of February, with Newcastle failing to score a league goal since that encounter. Whether or not a stay at Tottenham would’ve resulted in the 29-year-old playing just as many games is up for debate, but according to Brown, this could look like a ‘great signing‘ for the Toon Army regardless.
