According to the ChronicleLive’s Lee Ryder, Steve Bruce has provided an update on Matty Longstaff’s contract talks and a large portion of the Toon Army have been voicing their opinions online.
Speaking in the press conference ahead of the Tyneside club’s clash with Southampton on Saturday, when asked about the youngster’s contract negotiations, Bruce said “we are hoping there is a positive outcome. Let’s hope it can get resolved. Matty, we all know what I think of him.”
The Geordie boss hinted the board are still working on the terms before they can come to an agreement with Longstaff’s representatives.
Bruce is a known admirer of the Newcastle academy graduate and handed the local his first team debut. Longstaff has become a real fan favourite with many of the Magpies off the back of a series of impressive performances. The 19-year-old has made 7 appearances in the Premier League for the Black and Whites and famously scored goals against Manchester United in both the home and away fixtures (Transfermarkt).
Understandably many fans are growing concerned over the delay after the club announced new extensions for veteran midfielders Jonjo Shelvey and Matt Ritchie on Friday. Longstaff’s market value is a meagre £2.25m, and with the teenager linked to a major European club, several supporters are fuming a new contract hasn’t been sorted .
Have a look at some of the best reactions so far…
Pay him what he is worth. Clubs always think they can pay local lads less. If he leaves it’s will just another symptom of the skewed thinking and Ashley’s running of the club.

If its a footballing decision then he wont be staying with us, it would only be for his love of the club. To progress his career and footballing development he needs to leave #nufc
