Keith Downie has revealed that Mike Ashely is backing Steve Bruce amidst calls for the manager of Newcastle United to be sacked, but he’s also revealed that the Magpies getting dragged into a relegation battle could be the end of Bruce’s tenure in the St James’ Park hot seat.
As per a tweet from the North East reporter for Sky Sports, the patience of the chief executive of Sports Direct with the manager of the Tyneside club ‘would be expected to run thin’ if the St. James’ Park faithful were to be dragged into a relegation dog fight.
Would Bruce be unlucky to lose his job?
Should Bruce’s job be questioned?
Given that the Magpies are currently seven points outside of the relegation zone having played 17 games, it is perhaps not a concern just yet for Ashley that they will be relegated, hence why he’s happy to stick by his manager for now.
However, Burnley and Fulham, who sit below Newcastle, have an extra game in hand and given that the Magpies have not won in their last six matches in the top flight, things are certainly starting to look a bit bleak.
The 1-0 loss to bottom of the league Sheffield United was certainly not good enough, as concerns grow as to whether Bruce is the man to drive the Toon forward.
Although Downie also confirmed that he retains the support of the owner, Bruce’s job may well be at risk if Newcastle start to drop further down the table.
