Newcastle United defender DeAndre Yedlin has been the subject of late interest from Southampton, with the Saints opening talks over a potential loan move, according to Football Insider.
Yedlin has found himself down the pecking order at St James’ Park having lost his place in the side to Javier Maquillo, which meant he was only able to make ten starts and 16 appearances in the Premier League for the Magpies last term (via Sofascore).
The 27-year-old had been much more involved in the previous two seasons, but it appears he is not featured in Steve Bruce’s preferred starting line-up and he is yet to make a single league outing so far this campaign. The Magpies as a result are open to allowing the full-back to leave the club on loan before the deadline.
Southampton are hoping to secure a deal for Yedlin to provide cover in the full-back position, having seen their attempts to sign Brandon Williams from Manchester United on loan be rejected by the Red Devils. So, it seems Ralph Hasenhuttl has now turned his attentions towards the 27-year-old.
Newcastle have suffered some misfortune so far this term on the injury front to their defenders, but mostly that has affected them at centre-back rather than in the full-back positions. Yedlin could certainly still do a job for the Magpies as cover, but it seems that Bruce does not feel that the American he has the qualities he is looking for.
Yedlin will be more than able cover for Southampton, having won 48% of his duels last season andhaving averaged 1.1 tackles per game (via Sofascore). A temporary move away would see the American spend the last year of his current deal away from Newcastle so could signal the end of his career with the Magpies.
