According to a report by Chronicle journalist Lee Ryder, Newcastle United are potentially in the market for a striker after tying down Spurs defender Danny Rose on loan for the rest of the season – with Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud firmly in their sights.
As explained by this Chronicle piece, the Magpies were after Giroud’s signature at the start of the window but conceded defeat when Inter Milan were thought to have tied the player down. However, after the deal reportedly fell through, Newcastle could be back in for the Frenchman as they look to add necessary firepower up front. Giroud played a crucial role during Chelsea’s eventual Europa League triumph last season – scoring 11 goals and assisting four others in the competition over 14 appearances en route to the final. Compared to current Newcastle marksman Joelinton, Giroud also averaged superior statistics when playing regularly in 2018/2019, amassing 3.3 shots per game and 1.4 key passes in Europe, as per WhoScored.com. Even though Joelinton wins 5.4 aerial duels per match on average, it’s clear to see that the Frenchman would be a more prolific alternative.
As a result, supporters are ecstatic with the reemerged links for the forward – here’s what they had to say on Twitter:
Knighthood requires for Steve Bruce if we sign rose and giroud!!

That would make a very good window an excellent one.

We definitely need a striker who can take those opportunities and score!
