Newcastle United: Steve Bruce gives big Matty Longstaff update

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has given a rather big update on the future of Matty Longstaff.

Speaking to The Shields Gazette, Bruce claimed that “we’re 99.9% sure that it’s done” with regards to the youngster signing a new deal at the Tyneside club as he is apparently on his way to York to link up with his coach and the squad at their training base as the final paperwork is completed.

Should Newcastle start Longstaff?

Longstaff was running down his current deal and was at risk of leaving St. James’ Park on a free transfer, but it now looks like Bruce has convinced him to stay in the North East.

One report had linked Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton and David Moyes’ West Ham United with a possible move for the central midfield player given that his contract was running out, but now any move away from the Magpies seems to have been blown out of the water.

Indeed, Longstaff  enjoyed a fine breakthrough season in 2019/20, where he played in a total of 15 games in all competitions, scoring three goals, including two against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United in the Premier League, according to Transfermarkt.

The 20-year old is also an established youth international player, having played in two matches for the England U20’s side, as per the website.

Let us start with the 10th most expensive, how much was Jonjo Shelvey?

Bruce will no doubt be delighted that he has convinced the homegrown talent to stay, as he can now give some healthy competition to the likes of Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey and his brother Sean Longstaff in the centre of the pitch.

Nevertheless, the announcement of Longstaff signing a new contract will surely come in due course.

Geordies, should Longstaff stay at the Toon? Comment below!
