Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has given a rather big update on the future of Matty Longstaff as he spoke in his press conference (via The Chronicle) ahead of his team’s away game against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League.
As per the outlet, Bruce admitted that ‘it is the player’s prerogative’ with regards to whether the central midfield player would like to stay at the Tyneside club, as he also talked about the offer that has been given to him in the North East, but it is not yet clear as to whether he will accept it.
“We have done everything we can to reassure that his future is with us and he stays here. We made him a wonderful offer and it is now up to Matty.
“The ball is in his court and we say to him: ‘Where do you want to ply your trade?’
“We all hope that it is here. I have tried my upmost to get him to commit, but it is the player’s prerogative these days.”
Longstaff has been heavily linked with a move to Udinese in Italy, as they have reportedly offered more money than the St. James’ Park faithful in terms of wages with the England youth international running down his current contract.

It is perhaps not a surprise that the Magpies have offered him a new deal and that Bruce would ideally like to keep him, as Longstaff has arguably been enjoying a fine breakthrough 2019/20 season so far.
The 20-year old has featured in 13 games in all competitions, scoring three goals, including two of those in the top flight against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United, according to Transfermarkt.
Longstaff may have an added incentive to stay if the proposed takeover of the Toon is approved by England’s highest division, as Amanda Staveley’s Saudi Arabian led-group may have plenty of money to spend and improve the squad in the upcoming summer transfer window.

However, the final decision ultimately lays in the hands of the midfielder.
