A journalist has revealed why Newcastle United's reported move for Emerson failed on deadline day.

The Lowdown: Talks

As per Meu Timao, the St. James' Park faithful were in talks to sign Ederson, and a permanent deal could have been done.

It could have also been a loan deal with an obligation to buy, but the North East club will now have to wait until the January transfer window if they want to sign him.

The Latest: No official offer

Writing on his blog, journalist Mario Kempes has now claimed that neither Ederson nor his club Fortaleza received any actual offers from the Tyneside outfit for his signature.

He is currently on loan there from Corinthians, and so a deal would have had to be struck with them as well for a move to go through.

The Verdict: Shame

Given that Steve Bruce's team only managed to bring in one permanent senior signing in the shape of Joe Willock from Arsenal, it is a shame that Ederson was not signed as he would have been a useful player to have in the squad.

With the ability to play in a variety of roles across the midfield, Bruce could have done with his utility, and at 22 years of age, the Brazilian still has potential to develop into a much better player than he is now.

Nonetheless, the Magpies will now have to survive with who they have, and perhaps the lack of depth in the centre of the park will come back to bite them.
