Keith Downie has dropped a Newcastle United transfer claim about Ainsley Maitland-Niles on Deadline Day.
As per a tweet from the Sky Sports journalist, “he’s a player Newcastle are interested in”. However, the possible deal to take Joe Willock on loan from the Emirates Stadium faithful is “more advanced” with “less competition” to sign him, with Downie adding that the Tyneside club cannot sign both players on loan from Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.
Does Maitland-Niles start for Newcastle?
Maitland-Niles would be ideal for Newcastle if Willock deal collapses
The signing of Maitland-Niles on loan from the Gunners could be an ideal one for the St. James’ Park faithful if the deal to take Willock on loan does collapse, for whatever reason.
Although the 23-year-old has not played much for the North London club in recent weeks, with his last game coming against Crystal Palace over two weeks ago (Transfermarkt), he has put in some good displays so far in the 2020/21 term when he has played. Invincibles legend Martin Keown even said that he can be ‘a Rolls-Royce of a player at times’ after a very impressive UEFA Europa League performance back in December.
As a player who can certainly give Steve Bruce’s side some real legs and energy in the heart of the midfield, the England international would certainly have been quite the coup, but given the interest in Willock, plus the fact that Maitland-Niles is seemingly on his way to West Brom, we can’t see him being a Newcastle player when the window closes.
