Kevin Campbell has revealed to Football Insider that he heard whispers about Alfredo Morelos signing for Newcastle United before Callum Wilson joined them instead.
Speaking to the news outlet, the former Everton and Arsenal star was full of praise for the Rangers poacher, and added what he had heard from the St. James’ Park camp:
“One thing for sure is that he is a goal scorer. I love that he is grumpy when he is not scoring. You have got to be ruthless and he is ruthless.
“Sometimes he gets in altercations but that is what makes him. I’ve heard whispers of Newcastle before Callum Wilson joined them.”
Morelos is a goal poacher
Indeed, Morelos is a goal poacher, having scored no fewer than seven times while also supplying a handy four assists in 16 games in all competitions so far in the 2020/21 term (Transfermarkt).
Should Newcastle sign Morelos?
Over the course of his career in Scottish football, the Colombia international has registered 84 strikes in total and a further 33 assists in 154 matches over all competitions across the last four consecutive seasons (Transfermarkt).
Morelos would provide healthy competition at Newcastle
Indeed, Morelos could provide some perhaps much-needed competition in the forward areas for Steve Bruce’s team.
If Callum Wilson got injured or fell out of form for a sustained period of time, then the Tyneside club would likely struggle for goals, given that he has scored six so far in just eight games in the Premier league this season, while Andy Carroll and Joelinton have both failed to find the back of the net as of yet (Whoscored).
Morelos also offers more than just a goal threat, and would perhaps be an upgrade on what the Magpies already have in striking areas in the North East.
The 24-year-old has averaged more shots and key passes than all three strikers mentioned above so far in their respective domestic leagues this campaign (Whoscored).
Yes, the level of the Scottish Premiership is certainly not at the same level as the English top flight, but Morelos could definitely add some healthy competition at the Toon if he is still a target.
