Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Manchester United man Phil Jones, according to a tweet from Scandinavian journalist Fredrik A. N. Filtvedt.

As per the tweet, the Red Devils are trying to clear out space, both in terms of trimming their squad and adding to their transfer kitty.

Jones is thought to be one of those players that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team is looking to potentially offload as they attempt to sign RB Leipzig ace Dayot Upamecano.

As such, Steve Bruce's side are apparently interested in pouncing on this fact with a move for Jones in the summer transfer window.

Indeed, the 28-year old offers a wealth of experience in the Premier League, having played in 200 games initially for Blackburn Rovers and of course MUFC over the last 11 consecutive terms (via Transfermarkt).

He was also part of the squad that won the top-flight title back in 2013 in Sir Alex Ferguson's last season in charge at Old Trafford, with several other trophies to his name (per the website).

Jones is also a relatively established English international, having played in 27 matches for the senior side since his debut under Italian boss Fabio Capello back in 2011, and he was also part of the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cup squads for England, as per Transfermarkt.

However, having only made a mere two appearances all season long for Man Utd in the 2019/20 campaign, one may question whether he is match-sharp enough to start playing in the new 2020/21 term, which is just around the corner.

The Magpies also already have six senior central defenders currently on their books at the moment, so perhaps the Toon should focus their attention on strengthening in other positions in this window for now.

Geordies, would Jones be a good signing? Comment below!
