Landing this £49.5m-rated midfielder would hugely boost Chelsea’s title hopes next season

The Chelsea fans have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern this week since their side were comfortably defeated by Manchester City at The Etihad Stadium.

Antonio Conte has taken his fair share of criticism this week after his side showed absolutely no ambition against the league-leaders last Sunday. Very few clubs have set up to take the game to Guardiola’s side this season, which is understandable given their evident superiority in the English top-flight. However, Chelsea’s approach was both perplexing and disappointing, as they have plenty of talented players on the field who were capable of producing moments of quality against their opponents, but Conte’s approach nullified the creative flair of his outfield players.

Regardless of your standpoint regarding Conte’s approach to the fixture last Sunday, one thing was certainly apparent – the gulf in class between City and Chelsea is immensely concerning, and The Blues will need to strengthen their squad next summer to begin closing the gap.

According to The Daily Mirror, Chelsea’s former employee Ramires has publicly declared his desire to return to Stamford Bridge in the summer, but the club will need to target talent of a much higher calibre in order to prevent City from achieving Premier League domination.

With that being said, Chelsea should consider signing one of the most highly-regarded young central midfielders in Europe, namely Sergej Milinkovic-Savic (valued at £49.5 million by Transfermarkt) of Lazio. The Serbian international is rapidly becoming one of the impressive midfielders in world football due to his immensely impressive performances for the top-four chasing Serie A side this season.

Standing at 6ft 3in tall, Milinkovic-Savic has often been mistaken for a destroyer due to his physical presence, when in actual fact his technical ability represents the pinnacle of his footballing talents. The 23-year-old looks destined to become a future star in European football regardless of where his future lies, so Chelsea should do everything they can to fend off competition from a likely big number of rival clubs this summer and sign a player who would enable the club to go head-to-head with Man City next season.

Having bagged 9 goals and 2 assists this term, his influence on the pitch is clear for all to see, whilst at 23-years-old, he’s only going to get better.
