Leeds United director of football Victor Orta has confirmed that he tried to sign Glasgow Rangers winger Ryan Kent during the summer.

Leeds were linked with a move for the 23-year-old throughout the recently-closed window, and even had a £10m bid rejected for the former Liverpool man. However, despite this, there was very little talk from the Premier League side themselves about their reported interest.

Now, speaking to The Yorkshire Evening Post, Orta has discussed their failed transfer pursuit. He said:
“I think [Kent’s] club doesn’t want to sell him.
“We tried and we believe clearly Glasgow Rangers doesn’t want the player to leave. It was never their plan to put Kent in the market.”
Rangers stance paid off
Keeping hold of the Oldham-born ace was vital to the Gers’ chances of success this term. In his first 12 matches of the season, Kent has managed five goals and five assists, and he was even named as the SPFL Player of the Month for August.

£10m would have been a considerable fee, and would have earned Rangers a decent profit as well. However, it is not in their best interests to sell right now. Before this campaign, Kent had arguably flattered to deceive – he had managed just 14 goals in 76 games. If Leeds were willing pay £10m at that point, imagine what they could get if Kent leads Rangers to a Premiership title?
