The Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern are growing concerned that a mini injury crisis could leave them short of defensive options in the near future.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side have already been forced to re-assess their ambitions for the season after just 16 league matches. At the beginning of the season, the resident Lilywhites in the Tavern were predicting a genuine title-challenge from their club this season, but Manchester City’s record-breaking start has left their hopes and dreams in tatters. However, the same supporters propping up the bar are quietly confident of going on a Champions League run in 2018, despite their unfavourable draw against Italian giants Juventus.
And Tottenham’s expectations for the season are not the only thing that Pochettino is being forced to re-assess at the moment, as growing concerns over a lack of options in central defence have caused him to consider the possibility of recalling Cameron Carter-Vickers from his loan spell at Sheffield United.
Pochettino recently revealed that Toby Alderweireld will be ruled out with a troublesome hamstring injury until February 2018 and his admission has raised fresh concerns over the depth of Tottenham’s squad.
With Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez the only other recognised central defenders available to Pochettino, recalling Carter-Vickers might represent Tottenham’s most economically viable option at this stage.
However, Pochettino and Levy should be working in conjunction to establish what is best for the future of both the player and the club, and at this stage, recalling Carter-Vickers would not be a fantastic option for either party concerned.
Recalling Carter-Vickers would represent a massive risk for Tottenham, considering his lack of experience in the top-flight.
At Sheffield United, Carter-Vickers has a brilliant opportunity to experience the pressure and intensity of playing for a club chasing promotion to the Premier League, and in the long run, his time at Bramall Lane could be invaluable for his development.
If Tottenham want to bolster their defensive options in January, they should be attempting to bring in new talent from outside North-London, and allow Carter-Vickers to continuously improve through his exposure to regular first-team football for The Blades.
