Having sold Lucas Digne to Everton in the summer and not brought in a replacement, Barcelona have been left with just Jordi Alba as their only senior option for the left-back position.
As a result, once the January transfer window opens, the La Liga champions could turn their attention to the Premier League as they seek to bring in adequate cover for Alba with a move for Arsenal’s Nacho Monreal allegedly being lined up.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have set their sights on both Monreal and Liverpool’s Alberto Moreno with manager Ernesto Valverde desperate to see the left-back position reinforced.
With Monreal’s contract set to expire next summer, Arsenal will be tempted to part ways with the Spaniard if he has not signed a new deal and a proposal arrives in January from Barcelona.
And, at 32, £11.7m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Monreal may fancy a new challenge and the chance to win a bunch of silverware as he enters the latter stages of his football career.
However, the Gunners should look to keep Monreal at the Emirates by offering him a new contract and rejecting Barcelona’s advances — should they arrive.
The Spain international is one of Arsenal’s most consistent performers and a much better defender than his deputy Sead Kolasinac.
Monreal has also started to add goals to his game from set pieces to add to his overall solid contribution to the team.
In a side that is often criticised for their defending, Monreal’s capabilities in that department rivals that of the very best in his position in the Premier League and, ultimately, makes him a player worth keeping around beyond this season.
