It is fair to say that Crystal Palace have hit a sticky patch recently with a lack of progress on and off the pitch, and it seems that Roy Hodgson is growing a little irritated by recent developments.

His side may be winless in seven matches, with Jordan Ayew's late strike against West Ham on Boxing Day securing their only victory in 11 matches, but the Eagles' boss has instead aimed his frustration at the board, rather than his players.

Crystal Palace had been linked with deadline day moves for Nathan Ferguson and Jarrod Bowen - with the latter joining the Hammers - two players who could have provided a boost to the squad due to the lack of quality in right-back and at right-wing, with Ayew playing out of position there in recent weeks.

As a result, there was only one incoming at Selhurst Park in the form of Everton loanee Cenk Tosun, with fellow signing Scott Banks departing on loan to Alloa Athletic.

The club may have retained the services of Wilfried Zaha once more, but his return of three goals and four assists this term suggests they may need more firepower up-front to retain their Premier League status, since they have scored only 22 goals in 25 league games.

In reflecting on an underwhelming transfer window, as reported by Football.London, Hodgson said:

"I think we know, as a football club, that we need to make more inroads into improving our squad and rejuvenating our squad, and bringing in some fresh faces.

"An awful lot of the faces I see every day are the same faces I have seen every day since I came to the club and inherited them.

"I think now, [chairman] Steve Parish, [sporting director] Doug Freedman and the American owners [Joshua Harris and David Blitzer], they are going to have to do a lot of thinking alongside myself and the coaching staff as to what the best way forward is and in the next transfer window what we are going to be able to do to try and ensure that this team gets stronger."

It seems, therefore, that the former England manager isn't exactly happy with the support, or lack thereof, that the board are showing.

Hodgson is well within his rights to be frustrated. He has proven himself more than capable since taking over at Selhurst Park in difficult circumstances, with the club bottom of the table early on in the 2017/18 season.

Since then he has comfortable guided the Eagles away from safety despite being given limited resources to spend this season - James McCarthy is his most expensive addition at a measly £3m.

Palace have been punching above their weight as a result, and the board needs to invest more resources soon in order to build on what has been a reasonably successful campaign so far, one in which signings like Gary Cahill and six-goal Ayew have flourished, proving that Hodgson deserves greater backing.
