The resident Kopites in the Transfer Tavern are well accustomed to rumours linking their star players away from the club, and they are preparing for a particular story from the summer to resurface this January.
The future of Liverpool’s crown jewel Philippe Coutinho has hung in the balance since FC Barcelona came calling for his signature last summer. With Iniesta now 33 years-old, and Ivan Rakitic just 1 year away from 30, it seems that the Catalonian giants are looking to the future with their pursuit of Coutinho. It was no secret in world football that the 25-year-old Brazillian was the number one target for the club, so it is unlikely that their interest has been dispelled by Liverpool’s stern refusal to entertain their offers so far.
Coutinho has refused to allow the speculation regarding his future to affect his performances on the pitch this season, as his record of 9 goals and 7 assists from 15 appearances clearly indicates.
His fine form in Liverpool red will certainly be doing nothing to prevent the Barcelona hierarchy from making a fresh approach in the January transfer window when another saga is likely to play out.
With that being said, Jurgen Klopp should be working in conjunction with FSG to establish a shortlist of targets who could potentially replace Coutinho in the event of his departure from Anfield.
Although it would represent one of the most controversial signings in Premier League history, Klopp should be adding Everton’s Ross Barkley to his January wish list as a direct replacement for Coutinho.
There is no doubt that there is a huge potential to be unearthed in Barkley’s game, and the prospect of helping the Liverpool-born star to achieve that should entice Jurgen Klopp to bring him across Merseyside.
The fee for Barkley’s transfer would be slightly inflated due to the fact Everton would rather not sell their local-rivals, but that should not deter Liverpool’s interest considering his obvious potential to succeed in the game.
