Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has heaped praise on Robin Koch for his ‘magnificent’ performance against Aston Villa.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side have made an excellent start to the Premier League season after gaining promotion from the Championship this summer, winning three and losing just two of their opening six league games of the season.
Kalvin Phillips, Liam Cooper and Diego Llorente were all absent through injury on Friday night but their team-mates stepped up to the mark at Villa Park, with Koch being hailed as a key performer.
What has Noel Whelan said about Robin Koch?
“Robin Koch stepped up,” Whelan told Football Insider. “He looked like a leader there last night at the heart of the defence, which is what you want.
“Sometimes that’s what brings players out, when you’re missing two big personalities and the captain in Cooper, someone’s got to replace that leadership and I think he did that magnificently again at the back, Robin Koch.
“I think that helps Luke Ayling, I thought the two of them were magnificent.”
Will Robin Koch keep his place for the remainder of the season?
A lot will depend on what Marcelo Bielsa has planned for Llorente when the Spaniard returns to full fitness, but Koch has certainly made himself a key player for the Argentine tactician.
With Cooper struggling for fitness as well, the German has made himself a key player of late and it seems unlikely that anyone will remove him from the starting XI over the next few weeks.
Leeds are flying at the moment, partly thanks to what Koch is providing on the pitch.
