Rangers successfully reached the group stages of the Europa League on Thursday afternoon, but only just.
Steven Gerrard took his side to Russia with a 1-0 lead over FC Ufa following the first-leg at Ibrox and they certainly didn’t make light work of a precarious situation. Ovie Ejaria put Rangers in a commanding lead after just 8 minutes but the hosts weren’t prepared to roll over and die as Dmitri Sysuyev levelled the score on 32 minutes.
But the tie got especially interesting when Alfredo Morelos – infamous for his hot-headed nature – received 2 yellow cards just seconds apart and was given his marching orders after 38 minutes.
In an incredible turn of events Morelos was booked for petulantly kicking the ball away before he proceeded to complain to the referee and receive his second yellow for dissent.
Regardless of age and experience there is absolutely no excuse for Morelos’ actions, as he could have cost his side the game-changing financial boost which Europa League football will provide for the club.
It will be interesting to see how Gerrard now deals with the situation as this will represent the first time in his senior career when he is faced with addressing an individual regarding petulant conduct and severe lack of appreciation for how his actions impact on his teammates.
Understandably, the Rangers supporters were absolutely incensed by Morelos’ actions and they turned out in their numbers to deliver a harsh but fair verdict on a key turning point in the game, with one supporter even calling for him to be dropped for the all important Old Firm derby with Celtic on Sunday afternoon.
Here’s what the Rangers fans have had to say about Morelos in the aftermath of their narrow victory…
